A popular tourist destination in Florida is Fort Lauderdale. With its intricate canal system, Fort Lauderdale has earned the name "Venice of America." Fort Lauderdale is popular among tourists as a yachting center, as well as for its countless restaurants and nightclubs. During the Second Seminole War, the United States built a series of forts, which give the city its name. Fort Lauderdale is a major city in the South Florida Metropolitan Area and the county city of Broward Country. Fort Lauderdale is often referred to as "Fort Liquordale" because of its beaches, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. It has been a favorite spot for a spring break among college students. Fort Lauderdale is also "America's top gay resort area." It is home to a large number of year round gay and lesbian residents. Also, lots of people from the north spend their winter and early spring in Fort Lauderdale.
