A popular tourist destination in Florida is Fort Lauderdale. With its intricate canal system, Fort Lauderdale has earned the name "Venice of America." Fort Lauderdale is popular among tourists as a yachting center, as well as for its countless restaurants and nightclubs. During the Second Seminole War, the United States built a series of forts, which give the city its name. Fort Lauderdale is a major city in the South Florida Metropolitan Area and the county city of Broward Country. Fort Lauderdale is often referred to as "Fort Liquordale" because of its beaches, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. It has been a favorite spot for a spring break among college students. Fort Lauderdale is also "America's top gay resort area." It is home to a large number of year round gay and lesbian residents. Also, lots of people from the north spend their winter and early spring in Fort Lauderdale.

Apart from its shops and nightclubs, Fort Lauderdale is known for many museums. The African American Research Library and Cultural Center has a collection of around 75,000 books and other materials for studies in the various aspects of the lives of people of African descent. The Bonnet House is a historic home enlisted as one of America's Most Endangered Places. The Fort Lauderdale Antique Car Museum has an extensive collection of Packard automobiles. The International Swimming Hall of Fame promotes swimming as a sport. The Museum of Art at Fort Lauderdale is known for emphasizing contemporary art, hence among the artifacts you will find a collection of ceramics by Pablo Picasso. The most visited museum is the Museum of Discovery and Science. It shows 3D IMAX films and offers simulated rides to Mars. It also has an extensive display of Floridian fauna and flora. The Old Dillard Art Museum is a historic school enlisted in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The Old Fort Lauderdale Village and Museum tells the history of the area through themed displays. The oldest house in Broward County, Stranahan House is also enlisted in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

The largest drive-in and daily flea market in the world is the Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop. It has fourteen screens and is regarded as Florida's second biggest tourist attraction. It also has a food court and a stage for musical and circus performances.

The Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is a great place for camping and picnic. One can know about the ecosystem of the park at the Terramar Visitor Center. Canoeing, fishing, swimming, bicycling, indoor skating and hiking are some of the activities allowed in the park. The gopher tortoise, indigo snake, butterflies, turtles, opossums, marsh rabbits, gray squirrels and wading birds are some of the main attractions of the park. The park also has a mile-long freshwater lagoon and a campground.

The Henry E. Kinney tunnel or the New River Tunnel is one of the three underwater tunnels in Florida. It carries U.S. Route 1 underneath the New River and Las Olas Boulevard. It is the only tunnel on public land in Florida.
