Although allergic reactions to body tattoos are rare, allergic reactions to tattoo ink is not uncommon. People who have sensitive skin or who are allergic to certain metals in the ink may have a mild to severe reaction. Also, if the tattoo is not taken care of properly, it can create future health problems for the person.

People who have sensitive skin or who may be allergic to certain metals in the ink may experience either swelling of the skin in and around the tattoo, irritation of the skin and/or oozing of clear sebum. People with allergies should think twice about getting a tattoo because of the huge risk of anaphylactic shock that can lead to death. However it is quite possible to develop allergies later on.

The usual signs of an allergic reaction for those who have developed an allergy to their tattoo can range from redness in and around the tattoo to a more serious eczema-like rash. These allergic reactions are often so mild that they are not even considered as allergic reactions. People generally treat the redness and irritation by taking steroids. Gently rubbing creams like Aloe Vera or Tattoo Goo over the irritated skin is a far better and healthier remedy for a tattoo rash than taking drugs. Some people may react more seriously to the tattoo ink by breaking out in hives. This allergic reaction is not serious enough to seek medical attention. It can be treated with medication at home. Prescription drugs can be used to treat hives depending on the severity of this reaction.

You can take precautions against allergic reactions to the tattoo ink after you get a tattoo. Taking proper care of body tattoos can and will prevent a reaction to the tattoo ink. Keep the tattoo clean. Gently moisturize the area with a wet cloth one to two times a day. If it is fresh, keep it away from exposure to direct sunlight. Most importantly, know your body. Tattoo Artists use many kinds of metals for ink and a variety of substances that create various pigments in tattoos. Before spending lots of money on a tattoo ask your Tattoo Artist what metals and other substances he is going to use for your designed tattoo. If he lists metals or other substances that your body is mildly or highly allergic to, don’t get it done. It is better to be safe than sorry.
