Although pregnancy symptoms vary from woman to woman and even from pregnancy to pregnancy in the same woman, there is one symptom that will be experienced in nearly all pregnancies. This symptom is morning sickness, and it can make even the most excited mother-to-be feel miserable.

Morning sickness is nausea caused by your body's reaction to the large amount of hormones that are present in your body during pregnancy. Morning sickness comes in many forms. You may only feel sick in the morning, hence the name "morning sickness". However, you may also feel sick all day. When you have morning sickness, you may actually vomit or you may just remain in a constant state of nausea without ever throwing up. Even though eating may be the last thing you feel like doing, it is essential for your baby's health, and the right foods can even help make your morning sickness better.

One of the most well-known foods that is used to help morning sickness is ginger. You can take ginger in a number of different forms. Ginger ale, crystallized ginger, and hard candies or lollipops made with ginger all can ease the nausea from morning sickness. If you don't care for the taste of ginger, you can also ingest ginger in capsule form.

Some women find that carbonated beverages help with morning sickness. You may choose to drink caffeine free soft drinks for this purpose. If your favorite soft drink contains caffeine, you can still drink it to help with morning sickness as long as you don't drink too much of it. The March of Dimes recommends that pregnant women consume no more than 200 milligrams of caffeine per day. However, you should talk to your doctor to make sure your recommended amount is not less due to pregnancy complications or preexisting conditions.

Stick with foods that are easy to digest. Such foods include those that are high in carbohydrates, like bread, cereal, and pasta. Crackers are also especially good to eat when you are suffering from morning sickness. Eating several smaller meals throughout the day rather than three big ones can also help to reduce nausea.

You should avoid foods that are overly greasy, like pizza and french fries or other fried food items. Spicy foods should also be avoided as much as possible, as they can also trigger morning sickness. Foods that have a very strong odor when cooking, like fish, may trigger nausea, so you may also need to avoid them.

Morning sickness can be quite a trial, but fortunately most pregnant women begin to see an end to the nausea after about three months. If your morning sickness lasts longer, or if traditional food remedies or changes in your diet bring no relief from morning sickness, talk to your doctor. Morning sickness can actually cause you to become dehydrated or vitamin deficient, both very serious situations. Your doctor can prescribe medications to help with your morning sickness so that you can keep down enough food to keep both yourself and your developing baby healthy.
