Knowing how to handle yourself in a job interview is a skill. In summary the goal is to present one’s self to a company as a qualified candidate for a job position. In most cases what people do not know is that the company actually needs them more than they need the company. A job interview is not just a chance for a person to put his best foot forward, it is a time for both parties to get a feel of each other and determine if the working environment and style reaches each other’s expectations. Job applicants should remember that in a job interview, it is not just them who will be interviewed; they should also prepare a set of their own questions to interview the company!

The outfit for the interview is important as the way a person carries himself has a great initial impact for the interviewee. Thinking of what to wear is one thing - it is assumed that a person would show up for an interview dressed in corporate attire – but making sure that the whole look gives an impression of a neatness and cleanliness. Nobody would like a slob in their team, no matter what position is applied for. Everything must be kept neat, from the hair to the clothes and down to the finger nails. Little details count. Aside from the interview “look,” a person should also research ahead on the proper interview etiquettes. The attitude and manners of a person says a lot. Upon arrival to the meeting place, the job applicant should show a solid character by introducing himself and offering a hand to shake. Meekly coming in and waiting to be called is a sign of passiveness and a weak character so this should be avoided.

Preparing for the actual interview is not an easy task. One does not just dress up well and hope for the best if a dream job is at stake. There are several steps that a person can take to come into the room confident that they can answer well. The first step is to carefully review and ponder on what is written in a resume. As this document contains everything that an interviewee knows about a person, most questions will be formulated based on the resume.

Each job experience responsibility should be reviewed carefully so that if the interview inquires about any of them, the applicant will have ready answers. Memorization is not required; it is different to simply be knowledgeable about what is written. It is also important to relate what is on the resume to the current position being applied for. What is the relevance of the work experience and achievements to the company and how this would make a person more qualified for the job is one of the most important decision factors.

Aside from career-related questions, the interviewer will also be asking questions to determine if the applicant’s personality suits the company. These are easy enough as the only requirement is to tell the truth. The interviewer may or may not be able to tell if a person is faking answers but in cases where an applicant puts up a pretense, it may mean landing a job and not being happy with it. The last part of the interview to prepare for is finance related questions. In order to properly answer, the applicant must research beforehand the industry standards in terms of compensation and benefits. This way, the applicant will be confident that the asking price is not too little or overwhelming.
