Natural healing begins with what we eat. Good nutrition can prevent cancer, heart disease and other serious conditions. What can we eat to prevent cancer? Think close to nature and you when eating to prevent cancer. Eating well to prevent cancer and other diseases isn't rocket science but there are a few things you should know and remember.

Antioxidants Fight Free Radicals

Free radicals are incomplete molecules. These molecules are responsible for causing diseases such as cancer. Antioxidants fight and destroy free radicals that have the potential of causing cancer. Eating primarily fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains is a good start to fighting cancer. Eat to prevent cancer by consuming foods containing antioxidants.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is an antioxidant. Vitamin A provides other immune system support as well. Eat vegetables rich in Vitamin A to prevent cancer. What should you eat to get Vitamin A? Carrots and sweet potatoes produce Vitamin A. So do spinach and collard greens. Winter squash is an excellent source of Vitamin A. Fight cancer by adding some Vitamin A rich bell peppers to sauces and main dishes.

Vitamin C

Eat to prevent cancer by adding Vitamin C to your diet. The disease fighting power of Vitamin C has long been used to fight colds and flu. That same antioxidant power can also prevent cancer and other diseases. Vitamin C is found in grapefruit, oranges, guava, kiwi, red colored berries, bell peppers, broccoli, tomatoes and spinach, to name a few.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that comes primarily from nut and grain oils. Eat to prevent cancer by consuming more nuts and grains or cooking with these oils. Almonds, wheat germ, corn oil, soybean oil, safflower oil and soybean oil all contain high levels of vitamin E. Avocados, whole grains and green leafy vegetables prevent cancer with Vitamin D as well.

Prevent cancer by eating selenium rich foods but beware of meats raised on factory farms. Certain practices used by factory farms can accelerate cancer risk. Selenium is an antioxidant found in nuts and whole grains. Brazil nuts have the highest concentration of selenium. Selenium can also be found in meats, poultry and fish.

Eat green to prevent cancer by eating foods containing lutein. Dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach and other greens are highest in lutein. Collard greens and kale contain lutein. Try adding parsley to what you eat to prevent cancer as well. Green vegetables aren't the only thing containing cancer fighting lutein. Red peppers, squash and pumpkin contain a good amount of lutein.

Beta Carotene

Beta Carotene rich orange vegetables should be eaten to prevent cancer. Remember this antioxidant fact by seeing carrot in the name. Sweet potatoes, orange squash, pumpkin, mangoes, cantaloupe and apricots all contain beta carotene. Don't just rely on orange vegetables for beta carotene. Dark green leafy vegetables contain beta carotene too.

Recent studies have shown eating foods rich in lycopene helps prevent cancer and other diseases. Lycopene is found in tomatoes, pink grapefruit, guava, apricots and papaya. Tomatoes can be cooked to increase lycopene content. Adding ketchup to what you eat is a great way to boost cancer prevention. Tomato sauces are another.

The Omegas

No. I'm not talking about a sorority or fraternity. I'm referring to the amino acids. Omega 3 is one. Eat flaxseed, walnuts or oily fish to get it. Fish like salmon and tuna have a lot of amino acids. Amino acids work to strengthen a weakened immune system. You can take the Omegas in supplement form as well. Gel caps promote quick absorption.

You can eat to prevent cancer. Choose foods rich in antioxidants. Vitamins A, C and E are a good place to start. Pop a few Brazil nuts daily to prevent cancer with selenium. Think green to get cancer prevention from lutein. Add a splash of orange with beta carotene. Sprinkle on some nuts to get your amino acids. Eat to prevent cancer with a healthy balanced diet including all types of nutrients.
