If you have a comprehensive insurance policy, do you know what kind of specific coverage you will have if you get into an accident? Do you understand what your options are if you are in a wreck? These are things you will need to know.

Comprehensive insurance will cover your car if it is stolen or damaged. If you also have a collision policy added to your comprehensive, you will be covered if you are hit by another car. You will have a much lower deductible in the repairs of your car than if you only had comprehensive coverage.

If you have only comprehensive coverage, you are only insuring your car or possible the car of someone if you are driving and have a bump up with someone else. If that someone else doesn’t have insurance, you could be in a spot of trouble if the accident was your fault. You need to have liability coverage on your vehicle as well to make sure you are covered is someone decides to sue you in the event of injuries sustained in that wreck.

Having an insurance policy that covers you in every way is the best way to go. Include property damage liability to your comprehensive and collision coverage. In the event you are in an accident that is serious, you will need enough liability insurance coverage to keep you out of trouble if you are hit by a lawsuit. These kinds of things are happening every day so it pays to have the coverage you need on your car.

The kind of damage not covered by collision insurance is the kind that comes normally within the limits of wear and tear on your car. If your car is financed you will be required in most states to have collision and comprehensive coverage, not just liability alone.

If you were driving your car and hit a deer running across the road, that kind of accident would be covered under a comprehensive policy. If you were pulling up to the local convenience store and hit the parking pole, you would be covered by your comprehensive policy. However, if the old lady backing out into the street hit you because you were going a little over the speed limit, you would not be covered. You will need o make sure that you know the differences in these kinds of policies before thinking you are covered when you may not be.

Although comprehensive coverage isn’t required by law to have in every state, you would do well to have such a policy if you have a lot of money invested in your car or if you live somewhere that is prone to high auto theft. If you live where the occurrence of natural disasters is more likely like tornadoes and hurricanes, you should make sure to get a comprehensive policy on your car. The best reason for comprehensive coverage is avoiding an out of pocket expense that could be overwhelming in the event of an accident.
