Since ancient times, women have utilized their ears for the purpose of ornamenting themselves. The types of ear piercings have evolved over the centuries, and even among diverse cultures, ear jewelry is a language understood by all women.

The most common type of ear piercing is a simple hole through the lobe of the ear. It works whether the earring dangles or is displayed flat against the skin. Making the hole for a lobe piercing is generally the easiest and least painful of the process. With a modicum of care the earlobe piercing will have healed within 4 to 6 weeks time.

In the upper cartilage of the ear where it joins your head is the location a Helix type of ear piercing will be performed. The Helix offers a variety of earrings especially studs, hoops, and cuffs for customizing your jewelry display. It will require greater care and anywhere from 6 to 8 months before the piercing is healed. Do not remove the Helix except under dire emergencies, as it tends to close up quickly.

The Tragus is pierced through the cartilage in front of the opening to the ear channel. Across from the Tragus, on the inside mold of the ear once can place the Anti-Tragus piercing. A word of warning is necessary. The Tragus and Anti-Tragus are rather painful piercings. Although usually healed within four and a half to five weeks, these piercings require extra care to prevent infection.

Possibly the most difficult piercing, either in execution or in healing, is the Rook. This type of ear piercing is done in the same area as the Anti-Helix. The difference is in size. The Rook will be made to hold a thicker gauge earring. Healing the Rook has no average time estimate as many factors affect the process.

The Post-Modern look can be easily obtained with the Industrial Piercing, the Horizontal Lobe, or the Dermal Punch. The Horizontal is a long bar that connects two parts of the ear. There are various combinations of the areas the holes can be placed in to determine just how the Horizontal will look. Another long bar is inserted through the ear lobe along the length of the flesh. It results in a ball showing on the front and back of the ear lobe.

The ear has the marvelous advantage of providing many places within the small area of the ear to inset a Piercing. If it is a flat area or a solid cartilage then a Dermal Punch will put a hole in it. With a creative use of hoops, sleeves, studs, and chains fin your earring selection, you can maintain and modify, at will, the decorative accents provided by this jewelry style.

Always remember to treat and care for any new types of ear piercing you have gotten. It is still a wound with all the potential health risks possible of any such break in your flesh. Infection is usually the worst danger but allergic reactions to the metals used in your ear rings can have repercussions as well.
