Most writers dream of becoming a bestselling author one day. So many writers give up on their dream after a few rejection letters or after watching their books sell only a few copies after all the hard work they put in. However, great writers shouldn’t have to sit on the sidelines and let thousands of readers miss out on their creation. With a little work, you can become a bestselling author.

Title

A bad title can drive both publishers and potential customers away from even the greatest book. The first thing most people notice is the title. The title should be descriptive, concise, memorable and draw attention to your book. If you want a longer title, you can use subtitles, which have become extremely popular. This is important when writing fiction and non-fiction. Your title should demand a reader’s attention. Keep in mind that a reader won’t even read the description unless the title catches their eye.

Enjoy Writing

If you hate writing your book, it will show in your writing. Choose topics that you enjoy. This will make the writing process more fun and readers will be much more entertained. After all, who wants to read a book that even the writer didn’t want to write. Word will get around about your writing style and more people will buy your book. The more popular you become, the more books your publisher will want to purchase.

If you have to take on a project you don’t enjoy, try to find something interesting about it or interlace the project with one you do enjoy. Make your fun project the reward for finishing each day’s work on the rather boring topic.

Plan First

A rush job will be tacky and result in few sales and a bad reputation for the author. Create a strong outline for your book before you even begin. This doesn’t have to be completed in one day. Take a few weeks or months to jot down notes. When you feel you’ve exhausted all possible ideas, turn the ideas into a chapter by chapter outline. This will help your writing flow smoother between ideas without seeming like you just threw everything together at the last minute because of a deadline.

Publicize

This is one of the most important aspects of becoming a bestselling author. You’ve worked for weeks or even months on what you consider to be the best book ever, but no one knows about it. Publishers will only promote your book so far. This is especially true for new authors. You can either hire a publicist or promote the book yourself. Doing it yourself is the cheaper option, but takes much more time.

To promote a book yourself, you must advertise yourself online, in newspapers, on radio shows and even television commercials and shows if possible. Visit popular writing websites for your genre and post links to descriptions of your book. Another popular method is leaking the first one or two chapters to get readers interested.

The road to becoming a bestselling author requires great ideas and hard work. Before you can even begin to sell, you must put together a killer book. Afterwards, you must believe in and promote your book. Once it takes off, word will spread, making you the next bestselling author.
