Have you tried baking soda for heartburn? If not, you should. Baking soda is a cheap, effective and readily available solution for occasional heartburn. Check the box of baking soda in your pantry to find information about baking soda for heartburn. This is a cure that people have been using for many years. Why buy expensive heartburn medications when that box of baking soda is already in your kitchen? Using baking soda for heartburn saves you time and money.

How does it work?

Heartburn is caused by excess acid in the digestive system. This acid works its way back up the esophagus to cause a burning sensation and bad taste in the mouth. Antacids are substances which neutralize acid. Baking soda, also known as bicarbonate of soda, is a natural antacid. By taking baking soda for heartburn, you neutralize the acid in the digestive system. This keeps it from moving up into the esophagus to cause heartburn.

How much do I take?

Dissolve ½ teaspoon of baking soda in an 8 ounce glass of water. Using warm water makes it easier to dissolve the baking soda. Warm water is also easier on the digestive system. Taking more than the recommended amount can hamper digestion by causing all stomach acid to neutralize. A certain amount of acid is required for proper digestion. It is not recommended to take any antacid, including baking soda frequently unless prescribed by your doctor.

When should I take it?

It is safe to take baking soda several hours after a meal. Taking baking soda on a full stomach is not recommended. This is because of its effect on stomach acid. Neutralizing acid in the stomach while it is digesting food can hamper digestion. This may worsen the heartburn by causing food to sit in the stomach, undigested. For best results, wait several hours after eating before taking baking soda for heartburn.

How often can I take it?

Baking soda and water can be taken for a heartburn attack every two hours. People who have regular issues with heartburn should consult a physician. If you find yourself taking baking soda for heartburn more than once a month, it may be a good idea to see a doctor. Frequent bouts of heartburn may indicate more serious issues than simple indigestion. Your doctor can diagnose and treat serious heartburn problems according to the cause.

Are there any side effects?

There are no harmful side effects of taking baking soda for occasional heartburn. Baking soda does have a high sodium content. Patients with high blood pressure, heart, liver and kidney issues should restrict salt intake. Due to the fact that baking soda is so high in sodium, limiting use is a wise idea. See your doctor before taking baking soda for heartburn if you are on a salt restricted diet. Your doctor can recommend an alternative treatment for heartburn.
