What exactly are Google Gadgets? Simply put, Google Gadgets are dynamic web applications that can be placed on any web page you care to place them on. There is also a version of these applications that you can use on your computer desktop.

These Gadgets can consist of games, applications, maps, RSS feeds, or anything you can think of. If you have downloaded and installed Google Desktop, you can utilize gadgets there too.

There are so many Google Gadgets that picking the best would be subjective, so we will profile some of the most useful, fun, and interesting gadgets.

Here are some that can be used on Google Desktop.

CNN TV Gadget

With this gadget, you can stream live news to your desktop 24 hours a day. However, don’t be fooled by the name of this gadget. You are streaming audio, not video. You must have Google Desktop 5 or above for this to work.

Weatherbug Sidebar Gadget

If you like to know what the weather is doing in a more in depth way than simply looking out the window, this is the gadget for you. You can get the current temperature, the wind speed, and direction, and there is a link to find your local forecast.

TV Set

This is a gadget that puts a TV set on your desktop. You can assign five stations. It’s an interesting little gadget, but there are some caveats. You cannot expand the picture to full screen, and apart from Nasa-TV you have to find URLs for other stations and plug them into the gadget.

This Gadget gives you NPR (National Public Radio) right on your desktop. With it you can stream NPR programming, music, and play a game called, “Wait, Wait, Don’t tell me!” This is a daily news quiz.

GoComics from Universal Uclick

This gadget gives you your favorite comics on your iGoogle page. Get the comics that have been dropped from your daily newspaper.
