Having only been recognized as a breed unto themselves for about a hundred years, the history of the Russian Blue is steeped in mystery. It is thought that the first type of this cat was brought from the northern Archangel Isles of Russia to England in the nineteenth century. Many methods, both in breeding and therapy, have been tried on the Russian Blue to alleviate some of the shyness the breed exhibits. With a good deal of work, many are now quite content in public venues and shows despite their usual shy and nervous nature.

Physically the Russian Blue is very distinctive. The fur is a short, uniform blue-grey in color and very dense. There are fine guard hairs as a second coat that are tipped in a silver coloring. This makes for a very pleasant feel when petting the Russian Blue. Their paw pads are also mauve colored instead of the usual grey pads of most cats. It is the eyes that stand out the most in the Russian Blue. The eyes are a vibrant green in color and are spaced wide on the face. The face itself is wedge shaped and is accented by the large wide-based outward standing ears.

The body of the Russian Blue is muscular and fine-boned. The tail is long, slender, and tapered. These cats have a normal life expectancy of between 10 and 15 years. They are a very hardy breed and are not subject to any particular genetic problems or diseases.

The Russian Blue can make a very affectionate pet. They are friendly, emotive and very perceptive to the moods of their humans. They are quite likely to take an active part in trying to comfort humans whom the cats feel are sad or upset. The Russian Blue is very mild-tempered and gentle. Being shy by nature they are more likely to run and hide if strangers are around. They are also more likely to escape and hide if mistreated by a child than take retaliatory action.

It make take a while working to socialize your Russian Blue before it even warms up to you. Once they feel secure though, they will always be ready to cuddle. They are intelligent and are quite capable of entertaining themselves when you are gone to work but will be happy to see you when you return. This makes them ideal for single people or those who are gone from the home for long hours at a time. The Russian Blue does not deal with change very well and will take time to learn a new routine. It does not usually take more than a simple reprimand to teach the Russian Blue what is unacceptable behavior.

While the Russian Blue does not require frequent brushing, the affectionate nature of the cat welcomes any and all loving play you give them. They are often found to follow their humans around and will perch on your shoulder if you let it. Unlike most cats, the Russian Blue has no problem with showing affection to the people it has come to know and care about.
