Even though eczema is common in babies, parents will always worry and rush for medical treatment the minute it occurs. There are several natural remedies for eczema in babies that can eliminate the problem internally and externally to keep the condition away for good.

Baby and Mother’s Diets

Eczema is more of a hereditary condition rather than an allergic reaction. The rash—atopic dermatitis—is, however, known to be triggered by allergens either present in the baby’s diet or the breastfeeding mother’s diet. Once it starts, other elements such as temperature and chemicals present in baby soap or lotion can aggravate the condition. Identifying and eliminating the allergen is the first thing a parent must do to treat eczema. Some of the most common triggers of this condition may be in dairy products, wheat, nuts and fish that are introduced in the first stages of weaning the baby. Find substitutes for these items that will provide the same amount of nutrients for your baby.

Allergens can also be transferred through breast milk, meaning that the mother could be eating something that the child is allergic to. If this is the case, try hypoallergenic baby formula that is specially made for babies susceptible to eczema. It will help you find out what exactly caused the reaction in your own diet without compromising your baby’s health.

External Treatments

A baby’s skin is soft, thin and supple, which means that more care should be taken when treating eczema externally. Start with natural treatments before opting for medical creams to minimize chances of increasing the inflammation on the baby’s skin.

Moisturize your baby’s skin with unscented baby oil made from all natural ingredients. Some parents have tried natural olive oil in a baby’s bath for the same moisturizing effect. Numerous natural oils are available for baby’s sensitive skin, but only choose one that is free of additives, chemicals or scents.

Another trigger for eczema is allergies due to fabrics or diapers in direct contact with the baby’s skin. As a precaution, avoid using harsh cleaning detergents for the baby’s clothes or bedding. Instead, use natural fabric softeners to minimize the allergens. Cotton is highly recommended for baby clothes and bedding rather than synthetic materials because it is a natural hypoallergenic fabric.

You can also switch from disposable diapers to cloth diapers if the eczema appears around the baby’s buttocks and groin areas. Some brands of scented disposable diapers are known to cause a flare in eczema, and it can cause more damage because the skin in that region is more sensitive than other parts of the body. Again, opt for cotton diapers and keep the skin clean and moisturized to soothe the irritations.

However, if the condition has already developed, there is another method you can utilize. According to a study published in the Journal of Pediatrics in May 2009, researchers found that soaking an infected baby in a bleach bath for short periods of time twice a week is one of the most effective ways of treating eczema in babies.

Try these natural solutions for eczema in babies, but if the symptoms do not subside in about a week of these practices, contact your pediatrician.
