You might want to consider starting a pet sitting business if you are looking to start your own business and are also a pet lover. It is possible to start a pet sitting business with relatively low start-up costs. One of the first things you will want to decide if you are considering a career as a pet sitter, is whether or not you will do this business full-time or part-time. You might decide that you will initially just search for a couple clients until you see how the business progresses.

Look at the competition in your area. Try to determine whether or not there are many other pet sitters. Take a look at the services that they offer? If you find that there is some competition, decide what services you can offer in addition to the traditional services in order to serve a larger market and stand out above your competition.

Make a list of all the services that you want to offer to your clients. When you are pet sitting a pet in their home, are there additional services you will provide? Will you groom a dog while you are pet sitting? Will you give dogs their medications if they are taking any? How often will you walk a dog while you are pet sitting? Try to think of some unique services that you can add into the mix.

Your business will need a name that is catchy but that is not already taken by another business. Unless you will be doing business under your legal name (rather than a fictitious name), you will need to register that name. A pet sitting business is a taxable service. You will need to apply for a sales tax number through your state of residence.

There might be other licenses you need or rules and regulations you must follow in order to start and maintain your business. You will need to learn about the laws in the county where you live and your particular state of residence. Many states allow you to register your business online. Search for business start-up details for the area where you live.

Start to spread the word about your pet sitting business. Talk to friends, coworkers and even neighbors who are pet owners. Print some flyers and business cards to pass around in your local area. Offer special discounts and promotions for the first few weeks of your new business. Consider placing an advertisement in your local newspaper.

Always provide the highest level of care to the pets. Be polite and friendly to the pet owners. If you provide a good service, word will soon spread about your pet sitting business. You can always ask customers for referrals once you have established yourself as a good pet sitter.

By taking the time to carefully plan your pet sitting business, you are more likely to achieve your goals. Work to slowly build up your client base in order to build up a good reputation. You will be on your way to a successful business in less time than you might think.
