Affiliate marketing programs are a great way for stay at home mothers to make a little extra money while still taking care of all the tasks associated with the kids and the home. While these programs are usually very flexible in terms of when you work on them, the fact is that the best ones do require a consistent and dedicated effort in order to create a steady flow of revenue. If earning money as an affiliate appeals to you, here are some things to keep in mind when evaluating different plans.

First, find a plan that involves products or services that you know something about. There is no need to be an expert, but some prior experience with the products – even as a consumer – can help you move through the early stages of the process much more quickly. Many people find that familiarity with the product, or one that is somewhat similar, makes it much easier to identify target audiences and build a steady clientele much faster.

Second, look for a plan that makes sense. Some of the affiliate marketing schemes out there are so convoluted that earning a sale is this side of impossible. Even if the sales are coming in, some of the commission plans are so complicated that it takes forever to figure out if you are being properly compensated. Look for plans that are clear-cut, provide quick and easy ordering options for your customers, and allow you to track your business volume and compensation with relative ease.

When evaluating any affiliate program, take the time to consider what resources are provided up front for you, and which resources you supply yourself. Many programs offer their affiliates a pre-designed web site that can be customized slightly. Others will expect you to build your own from scratch. There are benefits to both approaches, depending on your skill set and how much you can afford to invest in the business up front.

You also want to get some idea of what type of support you can expect as an affiliate. Is there some sort of training that will help you get off to a good start? How about technical support, when a customer has trouble submitting an order? Can you interact with customer care personnel to resolve a customer issue? Remember, it’s your reputation on the line with the clients, so make sure you have all the backup you need to get the job done.

Next, make sure that you are always available if a potential customer has a question. So many programs are set up to run on automatic – that is, you set everything up, then back off and hope for the best. Go with one that does allow you to interact with prospects. By making it possible for people to contact you with questions, you help to distinguish yourself from the pack and come a lot closer to building relationships that lead to recommendations from satisfied customers.

Finally, the affiliate marketing program you select must fit into your values and lifestyle with ease. Don’t sell something that goes against your basic belief system, no matter how lucrative the plan appears to be; in the long run, you’ll be miserable and unhappy with yourself. Also, if your plan is to work on your affiliate business while the kids are at school, make sure you can turn a profit by putting in four to six hours a day, five days a week. This will still allow you to build a decent income, but have time to enjoy your family.

Fortunately, there are plenty of affiliate marketing programs to choose from. If one doesn’t work out, don’t get discouraged. Renew your search and find another one to try. In time, you’ll find the program that meets your needs and allow you to achieve the financial goals you’ve set for yourself.
